Chernobyl is absolutely safe to visit. Well, unless you're moving there or planning to look at what had left of nuclear reactor No 4 directly.
A one day visit wouldn't do more harm them flight from London to Kyiv. Just bring water and food with you and wash your clothes after the visit (of throw it away if you feel especially suspicious)

At one point in the 50s, the U.S. filmed a group of bombers flying in a staggered formation. The groups would fly back and pass the camera again to make it look like the U.S. bomber fleet was huge. The ussr believed it and built a huge fleet of their own that ended up being much bigger than the American fleet.

Others may have already mentioned it, but in reference to Chernobyl and safety: Unless you are licking things, or go to some very specific hot spots, its mostly safe now if you stay on the roads or other hard surfaces that have been repeatedly washed down by the weather. Deep in the forests its a few % "hotter" because the cleanup crew couldn't get everything, and there are a few waste dumps where equipment is piled up that are places you dont want to hang around, but in general its basically equivalent to a couple of international flights at most.
Obviously inside the sarcophagus or the hospital basement (where all the clothing of the firefighters was dumped) is not a wise place to go, but the rest, is just a deserted city.
There are plenty of videos of tours showing the rad levels of various places, and its all just fractionally above regular background level.

That was a great video Grey, amazing to see all of the behind the scenes work that went into making a video for your channel. The amount of value placed on the 'look' of a graph or feeling evoked by an image is extraordinary to hear from the creators perspective. So much content is taken in relatively passively and it is very meaningful to hear about the parts you kept and unfortunately made the hard decision to cut.

People are weird. Feeling guilty for watching a video the author decided to make public because other videos like this isn't public... What is the reasoning behind these comments? It is like saying you feel guilty for trying a membership when the company offers it to make you test the product.

Maybe a US/UK English thing... I'd call them portacabins rather than bunkers. The latter suggests an underground shelter or above-ground reinforced concrete shelter.

If I had to guess the "Sporting Goods" section of Alliant Techsystems is probably just Civilian Market firearms because many of those count as sporting goods under US law.
P.S. yeah Alliant Techsystems Made (Breaths) Center Fire Rifles, Rim Fire Rifles, Shotguns, Ammunition, Optics, Hunting and Sports shooting Accessories, and Gunpowder for Re-loading ammo. All of which were considered under "Sporting Goods"

Alliant Techsystems split off the sporting goods into Vista Outdoor before merging with Orbital Sciences Corporation into Orbital ATK, which in turn then got subsumed into Northrop Grumman.
Vista Outdoor has several brands related to gun related sporting equipment, including:
Bushnell, specialised in optics
CCI Ammunition/Cascade Cartridge and Federal Premium, both ammunition producers
Alliant Powder, making smokeless powder
As well as Jimmy Styks, making standup paddleboards and accessories, and several other brands both related to gun sports, and other sporting equipment.
All of my information comes from about 5 minutes of Wikipedia, so I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this info

regarding 31:00 When Google Earth was new, I could input "ICBM" into the search and ALL these sites would pop up, both in the USA and Russia! It was weird to see a big circular clear cutting of the trees with a tiny little shed in a little forest outside of Boston. Years later I tried to look it up again and not "ICBM" only yields museums. I even tried looking for the patch... but have a feeling it was painted over with tree texture...

These little nuggets like the bunkers, the photos, and Tekoi are what make the world a more beautiful and interesting place. It's just really cool to think about the fact that you guys uncovered some information that otherwise would have been lost, and that you'll be leaving a little nugget of your project in this town in Utah for other people to enjoy this obscure Soviet-era story.

50 minutes in, talking about disarming publicly by destroying planes somewhere spy satellites could see them. "Even if you have bombers hidden elsewhere, you're still incurring such a huge cost for each plane."
Flash forward a few decades and America spends more on the military than the next 13 countries combined, pouring trillions of dollars into planes that would never be able to fly, having factories continue to churn out tanks and other weapons of war that the army is begging you to stop, because they neither want nor need them, and they are just going to be sent to rust, unused in a desert.
But the politicians will continue telling the factories to produce, because they get votes from the people employed by the factories in their district and they get bribed by the weapons manufacturers who get a lot of tax money for building useless weapons. Sure politicians could use that tax money to help their community, but by directing the flow to the pockets of billionaires, they get a lovely little kickback to help support their coke habits

Fun fact: in the Soviet Union they did the exact same thing regarding war propaganda, saying they were the good guys fighting imperialism. Not sure about the hues, but actually red is the color which represent Russia nowadays and the SSSR back in the day, so I suppose they portrayed USA in shades of gray (most Soviet TV sets were black and white, by the way.)

musicredsubaru - 5 måneder siden
As interesting as Tekoi is, seeing the pictures of the Russians humanizes the place or topic very much. I remember growing up during the last years of the Cold War. Yes, there was genuine fear about nuclear war and invasions from the Soviets, but at the same time there was this exciting awe to meet Russians and Soviets in person. In my hometown, which is also a college town, a ballet company from the USSR performed, and both the host and the guests had a blast meeting one another. Before they left, they gave the hosts Ushanka hats, and the hosts gave cowboy hats to them in return. The humanizing experience kept the town abuzz after the ballet company left to continue the tour. So, seeing these pictures in the videos makes me wonder, "Who are these men? What are their names? What did they think coming to Tekoi? What were they feeling once the inspections were done? Did they have parties or picnics with the Americans?" The story can go on forever.
