You know we actually use all of our brain, right? The whole 10% thing is a myth that started before we understood that our brain has different parts for different things.

Here's an idea: let the owners of the devices store their data on their devices, as opposed to the companies who make the devices knowing everything about you. Let us expand the storage
Mysterios1989 - 15 dager siden
This discription of laws here makes me more comfortable to live in a civil law nation. Yes, while there are ideas (here) that are carried over since 1900 and even before, they are based on modern reviews of these ideas with potential adaptation and change. We don't have to look at decisions from 100 years ago, because it is very likly that the law these decisions were interpreting has changed since than, making the complete rulings irrelevant. And the courts can dicide to change the practice, ignoring previouse decisions.
While the benefit of common law is more flexibility in new problems, they introduce rigidness by having to argue about the changes of old cases, meaning your complete system has to be build up vertically, instead of more a horisontal structure in civil law were the bits and pieces can be swapped out and changed whenever it seems necessary or appropriate.

about the question of choosing between my mind and my phone, I have a small rebuttal: although I forgot most things, I would still remember all the passwords, so that accessing my brain means gaining access of all of my online account on top of my phone and computer.

If you're interested in extending your mind with technology, you should definitely read some of the work by Andy Clark. Natural-born cyborgs for example.
I think he would argue that under the right conditions roles of papyrus could be considered to be part of your cognition as well. And planting a chip in your brain is not something special. We connect with technology through our sensorimotor system: the API of our minds.

Why someone just make laws outdated? Like, give It a set time, like 15 years, then 15 years later discuss If they should make it last more or not? Or just do something like that, I'm sure it's pretty easy for people who are not like me and are actually smart. Of course, laws like freedom of speech cannot be outdated, but other laws, y'know? That's when It applies. Why isn't it a thing yet?

"Do you remember your location every minute of every day?"
No, and neither does my phone because I leave my friggin location "services" OFF. No doubt the government can track my movements using cell towers, but I don't think any of that info is stored on my phone itself.
And then there's those times it thinks I'm still at home, but I've actually left... it will never know what I'm doing behind its back.
"Do you remember what you said to your friend...?"
Of course I do. I said nothing to this "friend", because I have none.
"Access to your phone today is unavoidably about access to your mind tomorrow."
Not if I never get that cyborg implant. Anyone who does is a moron. Implant something in or on my brain that could be hacked? I don't think so, buster.

Meanwhile I still don't like using the phone. If I'm going to write a comment, I'll use my desktop with a proper keyboard than a horrible touch screen that can't get half of what I intend correct. Maybe 10 pictures taken a year, only Facebook that I use to waste time like others watch TV instead of interacting. I'd stick with my desktop if I didn't need the phone for work, that rare email I need to deal with now instead of when I get back into the office.

Also, "nothing to hide means nothing to fear" only works for government who share every single moral and idea with you and that will never disagree with you in any way, shape or form.... ie no real government.
Saying "oh, being Anti SJW and talking shit about feminists is offensive and thus should be illegal" or "cultural appropiation is offensive and it should be illegal" means that that same brick may be used by another person in power at another time to say "well, we have already established that offensive language can be made illegal, so i think its reasonable to make deep political disagreement also illegal as to not offend anyone.
And then, some years later you can no longer share your own opinion about religion, politics or anything remotely controversial.
"But we have freedom of speech!" Yes, and the second ammendment is as open and free as the first amendment and in most of the US you need licenses and checks before you can buy a gun. Who says that in the future you wont have to take a "responsible free speech" course before applying for your "free speech license" before you're allowed to say you dont appreciate x local regulation and that you think that "somewhere road" should be approved by the city council for widening

Sorry to get political, but I think the idea that “this [ruling] is just for this case, this time” described @1:58 is relevant to the present moment. Back in 2000, the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court took that very approach in Bush v. Gore, in which the majority ruled that the Florida ballot recount had to stop, and critically, asserted that the case was NOT to be used as precedent in adjudicating any future cases. (Although it later was, by a lower court; see below.*) Many felt that the Court’s actions made it look nakedly political and partisan, and as a result, public trust in SCOTUS has diminished ever since. I’m not a lawyer, but in the upcoming general election, if there’s an issue with, oh I dunno, the counting of mail-in ballots, I’m sure the current conservative SCOTUS majority would happily invoke Bush v. Gore as precedent, if they deemed it relevant. Moreover, given that they’ve established a precedent for issuing non-precedential opinions—in election-related cases, no less—I doubt they’d hesitate to do so again. None of this is how any of this is supposed to work, which is basically true of everything now.
*In 2006, the Sixth Circuit cited Bush v. Gore as precedent in Stewart v. Blackwell, with the lower court responding to objections by stating that “the Supreme Court does not issue non-precedential opinions”.

There's actually one object that's closer to me and millions of others than our phone and that would be glasses/contacts, assuming you wear them 100% of every day (except when bathing/swimming or trying to sleep). Outside of that though, yeah, phone's definitely number 1. It is nuts to think how often your phone hasn't been an arm's reach away because yeah besides swimming and bathing, it really hasn't been.

If you want to see my phone. That's fine. It is just a tool. I do have a smart phone but i do not live my life on it. The only thing that would be difficult if someone looked through my phone would be knowing i would need to update my site passwords. Other than that there is nothing embarrassing on my phone even in my texts. Everyone should use their phone as it really is. Just a tool to make your life easier. Not a way to live your life.
